Dull Pain Above Waist Left Side Back

About Zen Koan "Emigrants" by Shaun Tan

Shaun Tan takes us into a world fantastic and familiar in the graphic novel "Emigrants" (2006), a book that since its publication has become a landmark in the illustration. Through its pages the images tell the story of a man who leaves his homeland to a strange country, where unfamiliar with the language and customs of local women, and which will have to establish relationships beyond the language to achieve adaptation to the new environment. "Immigrants" is a novel without words, making greater achievement. You do not need any translation since the novel was meant to be understood by people everywhere and language.

The artwork reminds those old photographs of early twentieth century, since such images "of immigration to New York and Australia, was based primarily Tan to create the atmosphere of the story. Was also inspired by pictures, images of postwar Europe and in the movie "The Bicycle Thief" Vittorio Sica. If I pointed

plunges us into a fantasy world and familiar, is because the illustrations tell a story that many have lived and which is easy to identify, but also contain a lot of unrealistic elements and indefinable creatures, buildings of abstract forms imaginary language and words. These elements have the effect of enhancing the sense of alienation experienced by immigrants in dealing with the unknown.

The beauty of imagery, narrative skill and the identification that produces "Emigrants", have made this novel takes hold as one of my favorites. Despite the lack of words.
